FAQs

Have questions about our practice or dental treatments? Find answers to some commonly asked questions below:

Preventative Care

Q: How often should I visit the dentist for a check-up?

A: It is recommended to visit the dentist every six months for a routine dental check-up and cleaning.
Q: What can I expect during a dental cleaning?
A: A dental cleaning involves removing plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, as well as a thorough examination of your oral health
Q: What are the benefits of preventive treatments like fluoride and sealants?
A: Fluoride treatments and dental sealants help strengthen teeth and protect them from decay, reducing the risk of cavities.
Q: My teeth feel fine. Do I still need to see the dentist regularly?
A: It’s important to see the dentist regularly, even if your teeth feel fine. Dental problems can exist without symptoms, and regular check-ups can help identify and address any issues early on. Your dentist can also help maintain the health and appearance of your smile, offering treatments to address stained, chipped, missing, or misshapen teeth.
Q: Are x rays safe? Do I really need them?
A: X-rays are necessary to properly diagnose dental conditions that cannot be seen externally. They are used to detect cavities between teeth, pathology, and infections in the jaw. We are committed to using state-of-the-art technology and minimizing your exposure to radiation. Our healthcare providers will prescribe X-rays when appropriate and tailor schedules to your individual needs.
Q: Why should I floss?
A: Why should I floss when brushing should be enough?
Flossing is necessary to remove plaque and bacteria that brushing alone cannot reach. Plaque can build up between teeth and harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a dentist. Flossing reduces the number of bacteria in your mouth and helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Proper flossing technique can be demonstrated by our hygienists.

Restorative Dental Care

Q: What are dental crowns & bridges?
A: Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps placed over damaged teeth to restore their strength and appearance. Bridges are used to replace missing teeth by attaching artificial teeth to neighboring healthy teeth.
Q: What is a crown and why do I need it?
A: A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that restores a decayed, broken, weak, or worn-down tooth. It can also cover dental implants and root canal-treated teeth. Crowns are made from different materials and last 5-15 years with proper care. The dentist prepares the tooth by removing some of the outer surface. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth until the permanent crown is ready. The permanent crown is then placed using dental cement or adhesive. The process takes about two weeks.
Q: How long does it take to get a dental implant?
A: The duration of the dental implant process depends on individual cases. It typically involves a healing period of a few months before the final restoration is placed.
Q: What restorative options are available for replacing a missing tooth
A: In addition to dental implants, alternative options include dental bridges and dentures. Our dentists will recommend the best solution for your specific needs.

Cosmetic Dental Care

Q: What are the options for teeth whitening?
A: We offer professional, in-office teeth whitening treatments as well as take-home whitening kits for your convenience.
Q: Can you fix chipped or crooked teeth?
A: Yes, we offer cosmetic solutions such as dental bonding, veneers, and orthodontic treatments to correct chipped or crooked teeth.
Q: How can I improve the appearance of gaps between my teeth?
A: Options for closing gaps between teeth include dental bonding, veneers, and orthodontic treatments. Our dentists will recommend the most suitable option for you.

General Practice Info

Q: Where is Advanced Dental Arts Located?

A: Advanced Dental Arts is conveniently located at
4201 Anderson Ave Suite A
Manhattan, KS 66503.

Q: Do you take my insurance? Who are you in network with?

A: We accept most dental insurances and are contracted with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Delta Dental, United Concordia, MetLife, SunLife, and some Aetna plans. Even if we are not contracted with your insurance, we will ensure you receive the maximum benefits allowed. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about our Loyalty Plan!

Q: Do you offer sedation? Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)?
A:We currently offer nitrous oxide as a mild form of sedation. Nitrous oxide is safe and effective for patients with dental anxiety or a gag reflex. It is administered through a mask, and its effects can be controlled rapidly. It takes about 3-5 minutes to take effect and wears off in the same amount of time. Unlike oral or IV sedation, nitrous oxide allows patients to drive themselves afterwards.
Q: What are your office hours?
A: We are open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The office is closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Q: What services do you offer other than fillings and cleanings?
A: Apart from fillings and cleanings, we offer a wide range of dental services to meet your needs. We do not provide root canals, extractions, or orthodontics in-house, but we work closely with dental specialists to ensure all your dental needs are covered. We also treat children ages 6 and above.
Q: Is Fluoride safe? Why does my dentist/hygienist recommend it?
A: Fluoride is safe and helps prevent tooth decay by reversing early decay and remineralizing tooth enamel. It’s important for both developing and already erupted teeth. Routine fluoride treatments are essential for maintaining strong, healthy teeth and rebuilding lost minerals.
Q: Do you accept dental insurance?

A: Yes, we are a participating provider for several dental insurance plans, including CareCredit. Please contact our office to inquire about your specific insurance.

Q: What happens during your first appointment?
A: At your first appointment, you’ll provide identification and fill out necessary paperwork. Our dental team will review your paperwork, ask questions to get to know you better, and take x-rays and photos as needed. The dentist will greet you, discuss your concerns, and perform a comprehensive exam. They will check your dental restorations, identify any issues like decay or broken teeth, and evaluate your gum health. If necessary, they may schedule a cleaning or treatment for a later date. The dentist will also address any further concerns and create a treatment plan that will be discussed with you.
Q: What can I do for sensitive teeth?
A: Sensitivity toothpaste that contains potassium nitrate or strontium chloride can effectively treat sensitive teeth. It may take a few weeks to notice a decrease in sensitivity. Avoiding high-alcohol foods like grapefruits, lemons, oranges, and soda can also help. If sensitivity persists, consult your dentist for further treatment options such as applying unique compounds to the roots or recommending high-fluoride-containing home care products.

We look forward to enhancing your oral health!
